Who needs New Zealand when we’ve got Wales?

March 21, 2021
Having lived in New Zealand many years ago, a country I love, I was drawn to this article in the Sunday Telegraph 21st March 2021 and so loved it, reminding us all of the glories of Wales.  In particular, the reminder of our dark sky glories is so good.  The article reads: ‘In July 2020 New Zealand finally got its first Dark Sky Park – the Wai-iti-Recreation Reserve near Nelson on South Island – to show off its star-spangled skies.  Wales, too, has a new string to its cosmic bow the the recent launch of the Cambrian Mountains Astro Trail. Dipping into a wild swathe of hills and moors so remote, it is nicknamed bola buwch (as dark as the belly of a cow), the 50-mile, self-guided route strings together nine locations awarded Milky Way-Class Dark Sky Discovery status. Among them are the Arch near Devil’s Bridge (and Welsh Hideaways, I add!) in Ceredigion and Llyn Brianne Reservoir in Carmarthenshire.’

What a breath taking hidden part... of Wales. Stunning cottages with stunning views at every turn. We were a family of 9 so stayed in both the cottages. They were a real home from home. Lovingly equipped with everything you could ever need. From leaflets for things to do, kitchen equipment, board games, puzzles and not forgetting the peaceful setting and its beautiful local walks with stunning surroundings. It mostly rained for our week away but that didn't effect our holiday at all. I would highly recommend 🙂read more

My partner and I had a truly... wonderful time in Ty Mari and Penroc. We decided to book both (it's perfectly setup for larger family groups as there is an ajoining door between both). Both are very homely and you can easily relax once you get there. The Elan Valley is absolutely spectacular and the drive to the cottages takes you on a thrilling drive through the valley with lots of places to stop and wonder at including Devils Bridge and the Caban Coch Dam to name only 2.The cottages are easy to keep warm with the added benefit of underfloor heating so we were always cosy. It also gets really dark at night (something us townies aren't used to) and you can see more of the nights sky than I think I ever have! What I also am particularly impressed with is the communication from the owners before & after you arrive. They give great recommendations and ensure that your stay is really easy!We would highly recommend Welsh Hideaways. It's a real retreat and we returned home feeling refreshed and with a renewed appreciation of Wales.read more

There was loads to see and do in the local area including some seriously impressive sites, we couldn't fit it all in to a long weekend. If you want to completely escape - go here! I'll be going back for sure!read more

Just home from the most magical... week at Ty Mari. The accommodation is perfect in every way and the owner has clearly made every effort to make guests as comfortable as possible. Every detail has been thought of and the place feels like a home from home the moment you walk in. We booked a return visit within a day of arriving. Thanks Gareth for a fantastic stay. We are so glad to have found this little gem in the middle of the most stunning part of Wales.read more
