Scenic drive between Rhayader and Devil’s Bridge

November 4, 2021

There is no denying that Mid Wales is a stunning location, which has heaps to offer! The scenic drive from Rhayader to Devil’s Bridge is certainly worth a mention. This is one of the most beautiful drives in the UK, and it is something that is hard to do justice with mere words, but we are certainly going to give it our best shot! So, let’s take a look.

Mid Wales is a place that has scenery in abundance, and we are sure that this is something you will quickly notice if you decide to pay this part of the world a visit. A lot of the scenic drives here are set against some of the most breath-taking and panoramic backdrops. There are certainly a lot of opportunities for you to hop out of the car and take some memorable photographs. If you are someone who likes to explore off the beaten track, the mountain road from Rhayader to Devil’s Bridge comes highly recommended.

One of the world’s most scenic drives

You may think that we are being a little bit biased, but Rhayader to Devil’s Bridge was actually described as one of the top 10 best scenic drives in the world by the AA, so you do not simply have to take our word for it.

While you travel the watershed of the amazing Cambrian Mountains, you will get to enjoy some of the most majestic views and scenery. While en route, you will pass through the dramatic dams and lakes of the incredible Elan valley. You will also get to experience the mine workings in Cwmystwyth, which is one of the most significant and historical mining locations in Wales, so you get to explore the true story of this part of Wales as well. Plus, we are sure that you won’t miss the famous red kites that soar above this mountain route either. There is certainly a lot to take in, with every turn and twist revealing something else to get excited about.

When you leave Rhayader, the B4518 route will link the central Cambrian Mountains with the Elan Valley dams. Next, you will descend to Cwmystwyth, where you find wonderful Welsh Hideaways. From here, you should follow the B4574 toward Devil’s Bridge, where you can head to the Mid Wales coast and enjoy Aberystwyth, a well-known university town.

On the way, there are a lot of great attractions and areas you may want to explore. A lot of people like to take the Vale of Rheidol steam train journey. You also have the spectacular Devil’s Bridge Falls; you won’t want to miss this! Where else are you going to find a scenic drive with as much to offer like this one?

Devil’s Bridge Falls

We would certainly recommend that you plot your route beforehand so that you can make the most of everything that this part of Mid Wales has to offer. You can easily set up the route on Google Maps, adding all of your points of interest along the way so you can make sure you do not miss out on anything spectacular. After all, smartphone maps and GPS have a tendency to take us the quickest route, so adding in the points of interest ensures you do not miss anything.

Nevertheless, there are certainly worse places to get lost than this one! You will enjoy revelling in the spectacular scenery and attractions that Mid Wales provides. It is truly one of the most beautiful and stunning drives you will witness, and it is not hard to see why the AA has recognised it as one of the best in the world.

A beautiful place to stay in Mid Wales

This is just one of the amazing wonders that you can enjoy and experience in Mid Wales. If you want to go on this scenic drive and experience the best of Mid Wales, Welsh Hideaways is the ideal way to do so. What a breath taking hidden part... of Wales. Stunning cottages with stunning views at every turn. We were a family of 9 so stayed in both the cottages. They were a real home from home. Lovingly equipped with everything you could ever need. From leaflets for things to do, kitchen equipment, board games, puzzles and not forgetting the peaceful setting and its beautiful local walks with stunning surroundings. It mostly rained for our week away but that didn't effect our holiday at all. I would highly recommend 🙂read more

My partner and I had a truly... wonderful time in Ty Mari and Penroc. We decided to book both (it's perfectly setup for larger family groups as there is an ajoining door between both). Both are very homely and you can easily relax once you get there. The Elan Valley is absolutely spectacular and the drive to the cottages takes you on a thrilling drive through the valley with lots of places to stop and wonder at including Devils Bridge and the Caban Coch Dam to name only 2.The cottages are easy to keep warm with the added benefit of underfloor heating so we were always cosy. It also gets really dark at night (something us townies aren't used to) and you can see more of the nights sky than I think I ever have! What I also am particularly impressed with is the communication from the owners before & after you arrive. They give great recommendations and ensure that your stay is really easy!We would highly recommend Welsh Hideaways. It's a real retreat and we returned home feeling refreshed and with a renewed appreciation of Wales.read more
