Mid Wales

Attractions in Mid-Wales

Mid-Wales is a vast, beautiful region decorated with mountain passes, characterful towns, rivers, lakes and coastline. As the most secluded area of Wales, you’ll find Welsh culture at its most natural – an idyllic location for relaxing and winding down, and even learning the lovely Welsh language!

The Vale of Rheidol Railway

More leisurely progress through the countryside is offered by the Vale of Rheidol railway. Between mid-April and late October renovated, early 20th century steam locomotives run between Aberystwyth and the nearby village of Devil’s Bridge, covering the 12 mile trip in around an hour. The journey covers a height difference of over 650 ft and affords superb views of the valley. This is a ‘not to be missed’ outing for the whole family.

Bird spotting in the Cambrian Mountains

There are several RSPB Centres in Mid-Wales where lapwings, little egrets, redshanks and white-fronted geese can be seen. If you pop down to Aberystwyth pier as the sun is setting, you will often catch an amazing sight as you look up and see the murmuration of starlings. There is bird food provided for regular refilling of feeders and, especially in Penroc, the birds seen coming to feed re memorable, as many of our reviews highlight.

Dog Walking

You’ll find plenty of dog-friendly walks in Mid-Wales for your four-legged friends to explore that are away from sheep; rugged mountains, Hafod Forest, and beautiful coastlines like Ynyslas estuary to glorious gardens and vast parklands, there are many places to treat your dog to the local wonders.

Your canine companion will find plenty of trails to sniff, along with vast natural spaces that change through seasons.
