A lovely cottage in a stunning location. Penroc was just what we needed for some rest and relaxation. We could have spent the whole week just bird-watching from the upstairs balcony and downstairs ‘bird-hide’ with its picture windows!
SS from Hampshire: June 2022

Penroc a well-equipped cosy cottage in an absolutely superb location.  Incredible places to explore and then come back to relax and watch the wildlife through the window.  JW from UK:  May 2022

***** Excellent holiday cottage in a very picturesque part of Wales. We have stayed there 4 times now and always have a great holiday. The cottages have everything you might need and cater for dogs as well which is great for us. There are excellent dog walking routes at the “Arch” which about a mile up the road. The mountain road through the Elan Valley is a must do drive and we always take this route to and from the cottages. Highly recommended and will be going back for another stay later in the year.  PR from Kent  April 2022

***** Penroc a lovely place, very peaceful with lots of walks; would recommend.         PC from Swansea: April 2022

***** One of the best holidays e have been on in some time.  Ty Mari is in a lovely position with wonderful views.  The accommodation is very well equipped and the beds are super comfortable.  The caretaker and the team that run the cottage are attentive and make sure you have everything you need and more for the best stay possible. 100% recommend and we will definitely book again.                                                                                                                                                                             VS from UK:  April 2022

*****Beautiful Ty Mari is in a wonderful location.  There are great walks nearby.  The cottage was well equipped with everything that was needed.  The summer house was lovely, nice to sit and watch the birds feeding.  We were lucky with the weather.  Would love to stay again.                                                                                   SP from Caerphilly:  March 2022

Absolutely stunning location, stunning 2 cottages with everything you need for a lovely family break away.                                                                                                      AR from Mathern, Wales: February 2022

Penroc is a beautiful cottage with stunning views. Warm and cosy with everything you need. Spotless throughout and a lovely enclosed outdoor area, great for kids and dog. I think hubby is planning on taking his running buddies for a weekend in the future, with the optional adjoining cottage this would be perfect. We loved the cottage and its location. And special thanks to Alan (caretaker) for checking on us when it snowed. We were fine but it was kind of him to phone. Omg the bedding smelled amazing! Thanks guys for a great holiday. xx
KB from Shropshire: February 2022

Appreciate the team and all you have done to have our trip as a short weekend and amazing times with family. Everything was fab.

Ty Mari an excellent place. Just what you need to get away from it all. Would consider going again. Loved the cottage.
MR from Hampshire: February 2022

Penroc a wonderful and beautiful place & myself and family loved it there, fully equipped and the beds very comfortable. We only spent 2 days as a last minute thing but the drive was definitely worth it. We will return. Loved every minute.
JC from Portsmouth: February 2022

I would give six stars if this was possible!! Penroc is really nice and cosy and light. Perfect for a training day Ionians and for a sunny day outside on the table and up on the balcony. Warm with underfloor heating. The host was super-helpful and responsive, literally could not have done more for us! Outstanding!
FS from England: February 2022

We were a family group across 3 generations and everybody really enjoyed themselves. Wales is a great place to visit as long as you are prepared for wet and windy weather. Being able to take in all the views from comfy seats despite the weather was a huge bonus. We have stayed in many properties over many years but none has matched the attention that the host gives to ensuring your stay is perfect. We definitely want to return and maybe we will be able to see the night sky next time. If not, then we will try again!
MJ from London: February 2022

***** ‘Wonderful’
RK from UK: February 2022

A relaxing and rewarding stay in attractive and well-run Ty Mari
GS from East Sussex: January 2022

What a great lovely way to see in the New Year. We have had snow and rain but very mild. Where have all the red kites gone? We only saw three. Had some lovely walks and found some new ones. We have had a wonderful relaxing time ready to face whatever 2022 has in store for us.

Really enjoyed our stay in Penroc despite it raining quite a lot! Penroc is the perfect place to get away from it all.
B Family from Tarland, Aberdeenshire: October 2021
We loved staying at Penroc. The cottage itself is spotless with everything you need and a real cosy vibe to come back to after a hike. The setting and views are amazing and were a real highlight given the Autumn colours. Loads of great walking right out of the front door. Not many shops so bring your food with you but if you want peace, tranquillity and a break from it all, I couldn’t recommend better! (There’s amazing Wi-Fi and Smart TV if you need electronics alongside your tranquillity!). We will definitely be back – would like to see it all in Summer.
BW from Bristol: November 2021

We met Alan (caretaker) as we were leaving and thanked him for the cottage being immaculate on our arrival. Overall a fantastic escape to Wales. Thank you very much!

Another great stay in this wonderful area. Accommodation was excellent (both cottages) and weather good. We will return next June.
Family R from Kent: September 2021
Ty Mari was lovely, thought of everything even down to the little extras. Very close to Aberystwyth. Managed to do Devil’s Bridge, amazing. Amazing break from city life and will be back again. The dogs loved it and settled in well. One bedroom door was opening by itself (now fixed by caretaker). All round, a good trip though.
A,S & AE from Wolverhampton, Hereford and Black Country: September 2021
As always, a very relaxing stay at Ty Mari that comes to an end all too soon. See you again next year. xxx

Fabulous week in Penroc. The weather rained on and off but that didn’t stop us. Lovely walks at Hafod – lots to choose from. Recommend the new owners at The Druid Inn, Goginan, and to top the week, I get proposed to at Parsons Bridge. Penroc a beautiful cottage and location. Will be back.
K & JH from Peterborough: September 2021
Another lovely stay in beautiful Ty Mari. So peaceful and the area is amazing.
S, J & Benji R from Stevenage: September 2021
This was our 5th visit to Ty Mari. Lovely as ever – still keeps its originality. Has USB sockets around the home with excellent Wi-fi. We had a short break this year, which was much needed after the pandemic. We feel energised to go back to the turbulent world of city life. We will come back soon, God-willing!
HAB from Leicester: September 2021
Penroc exactly as it said on the tin. Absolutely perfect. Thank you

Penroc is a lovely cottage, spotless with gorgeous view. Wi-fi very good, plenty of games and books. Idyllic location, very peaceful. Just the sound of the waterfall to send you to sleep. A truly relaxing break.
AM from Wolverhampton: September 2021
Penroc in a beautiful remote location. Well stocked with games, books and DVDs for cosy nights in. Host very helpful ahead of visit and lots of useful information in the cottage. Steepness of stairs and lack of (second) handrail a slight concern. Balcony great for a cold glass of wine as the sun goes down.
JS from Cheslyn Bay: August 2021
Thank you for a memorable, tranquil and fabulous break in Penroc.
EJ from Liverpool: August 2021

M & CS from UK: August 2021
Great cottages in a wonderful location in Mid-Wales. The cottages are well stocked with lots of games, jigsaws, DVDs, maps, books and general useful items when on holiday such as bags, map holders etc, etc. The communication beforehand was very good and during our stay. Would recommend as a great location to explore Mid-Wales.
RH from Newbury: August 2021

We have really enjoyed our stay at Ty Mari. We had never visited Mid-Wales before and have been blown away by the stunning area. We have especially enjoyed the beautiful walks and lovely days out. Thrilled to spot dolphins at New Quay. Ty Mari is very well equipped, comfortable and in a totally special location. We found the owner’s caretaker to be very friendly and helpful. What more could we ask for? Thank you very much.

Family H from Newbury: August 2021
Two weeks of endless sunshine – Wow! First ever in 50 years! Relaxing time and hope to be back next year!
C B-B from London: July 2021
Ty Mari, a lovely cottage with beautiful scenery. It was equipped well and had everything we could need. The only downfall was the cleanliness as it looked as though the cleaning crew didn’t do as good a job as they should.
Manager response: Irena, my sincere apologies with regard to the cleaning. I have been in touch with the cleaning team. They assure me the full Covid-prevention cleaning was done but the Sebo vacuum cleaner failed to work and they had to make do without it. It has since been repaired. I’m sorry that brushing and sweeping was not as good. I’m pleased to say we have a Sebo vacuum cleaner in the adjoining cottage too, so we should never be without! All the very best and hope to welcome you again one day.

Ty Mari a fabulous cottage. Wonderful location in one of the most beautiful valleys in Wales. Exceptionally well equipped and comfortable. Had a very relaxing couple of weeks and will definitely return.
NA from UK: July 2021
Penroc a lovely cottage – well equipped and comfortable. The views were fantastic and weather was great. Good walking nearby – Hafod estate 5 minutes away. There are plenty of waymarked tracks there and at The Arch just outside the village for those who don’t feel confident with maps. Some of the high moments though were just watching the birds – nuthatch, sparrows and woodpeckers including a juvenile who flew into the cottage and was safely guided back out again. Lovely touch that ample birdseed and peanuts were provided.
HH from Reading: June 2021
***** Set in a quiet area on the national cycle path, only sound was from the sheep and a nearby waterfall; Penroc had everything we needed and access to our Netflix and Amazon Prime was a bonus. Met the very pleasant and helpful caretaker who was a mine of information. A good holiday.

Fantastic stay in both cottages combined! Stunning views and o lovely to be able to hear the waterfall from the garden terrace. It was perfect! Thank you for welcoming us to Wales.
EB from London: July 2021
Penroc is a wonderful place in a wonderful setting. Lazy days spent sitting on the balcony watching the bird’s and wild life go by , or be a little more energetic and have a walk around the nearby reservoir’s , and if you want a work out try a climbing up the valley where the disused ancient mines are .
Alan the caretaker is helpful and wealth of local knowledge.
We have been here a couple of times and every visit is different , and it just gets better each time as we get to know the area.
Booking With Gareth is easy and there is never any drama and everything just goes smoothly as you would want on holiday . The only downside is I don’t get enough holiday to stay here for 6 months at a time
J & C M from Devon: May 2021
We stayed both at Ty Mari and Penroc. The cottages were both very well equipped and comfortable. We had a wonderful holiday. We loved the beautiful views over the valley. Alan, the caretaker, was so very helpful.
P & PB from Kent: June 2021
We stayed for a week in Penroc and it was a superb lovely cottage, wonderful views, perfect location and the views of the night sky were stunning.
S &HH from Northants: Sept 2020
A stunning location with absolute calmness to escape from city life. Penroc is cosy with a good number of board games, books and DVDs to relax and detailed instructions for everything. The mountain road drive is awesome. Thanks, Gareth for letting us stay in Penroc.
JV from London: June 2021
I had such an amazing holiday with lovely walks, beautiful views and perfect company. Ty Mari is just the perfect place. I cannot wait to come again!
AD from Bath: June 2021
We had a wonderful week in Penroc with our dog. You can tell, by all the little touches and helpful notes, that the hosts really want you to enjoy your time at their wonderful properties. We managed all of the walks suggested (and provided on a, helpfully, laminated sheet by Welsh Hideaways. The view from the balcony is breath-taking and I would recommend the cottage on the strength of that alone! There are lots of books, games and DVDs to keep you entertained on rainy days. Alan, the caretaker, was such a nice fellow and he also gave us advice on lovely walks. Ten out of ten and we hope to return.
V & DH from Wallingford: June 2021
Amazing cottage in the middle of some stunning countryside. Location wise, you could not get any better. used the cottage as a base for a mountain biking holiday and the area that the cottage is situated was perfect. Highly recommend if you love the great outdoors and want the comforts of home when you’ve done all your activities.
DH from Bournemouth: May 2021
Really lovely cottage in a fantastic setting. We had a great week exploring in the glorious sunshine. Perfectly located for beaches, forests and the incredible Elan Valley. The cottage was ideal for us and although it is compact, it suited a family of 5 plus a dog very well for a week. So nice to arrive somewhere and find little things like a toilet roll, dish cloths and cling film which don’t often come with self catering but are very useful to get started. Tesco delivered which was also fab. It is an old cottage so don’t expect glamour but it has heaps of character and the summer house was a lovely bonus in the warm weather. Would definitely stay again.
M Family from Nottingham: June 2021
Fantastic cottage with fabulous views. Well furnished with lots of Board Games, DVDs, and books to keep you occupied on a cloudy or rainy day. Thanks for allowing us to stay in Penroc.
J, S, D & D from Thatcham: June 2021
Fantastic week in Ty Mari with glorious weather. Lots of beautiful walks in woods & on beaches. The children and dog loved swimming in the river down the lane. What a stunning part of the country and Ty Mari has been a wonderful base to explore from.
Family M from Bridgford: June 2021
**** We (Myself, my wife and my baby daughter) stayed in Ty Mari for a long weekend. Unfortunately the weather was torrential rain for most of our stay, so we were unable to enjoy what are undoubtedly some beautiful walking routes on the doorstep of the cottage. I think if you aren’t looking for a walking holiday, you’ll struggle for things to do, however we did go to a lovely pub near by called the Half Way inn who serve good quality food at reasonable prices. The accommodation was very comfortable and the hosts kindly left us some honey and marmalade for when we arrived. The sun did come out for the Saturday afternoon so we drove half an hour into Aberystwyth which has a nice sea front and quite a few restaurants. The hosts were always on the end of the phone and ready to help if we had any issues. The caretaker lives close by so can advise you if you have any difficulties which we really appreciated. If we booked again, we would book with a larger group of friends and have both cottages, as on one of the nights, the people staying in the cottage next door to us were very loud, which was stressful, however no reflection on the hosts or the beauty of the property. Overall a lovely place to spend a weekend if the weather holds out.
Response: Since installing double sound-proofed lead-lined doors between the cottages some years ago, this is the first mention of sound travelling and we are extremely sorry about that.
W & EB from England: May 2021
Penroc, an incredible little cottage, views were spectacular, wildlife almost close enough to touch, birdwatchers and stargazers heaven. Perfect stay, great service from both Gareth the Manager and Alan the Caretaker. Will be staying again!
HB from Clwyd, Wales: May 2021
What was supposed to be our first holiday out of lockdown turned into the biggest life-event. My partner proposed! Penroc & all its beauty, serenity & peacefulness will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! I have no doubt we’ll be back again!
T, H & Bear from Wales & Chester: May 2021
So lovely to be back in Ty Mari. Weather could have been kinder but we walked every day but one. We did some walks we had not done for years. Enjoyed watching the birds on the feeders. Chilled and relaxed. Can’t wait to be back again!
L & DD from Shepton Mallet: May 2021
My 50th birthday was a peaceful time with all the wildlife you could want. We found a common lizard on the doorstep of Penroc sunning itself. Woodpeckers all day and a Peregrine Falcon up by the mines. Thanks to Caretaker Alan.
J & CM from Honiton: April 2021
Just lovely.
L & AW from Vale of Glamorgan: April 2021
We were at Ty Mari for work, making radio measurements in the local hills & valleys, but as the area is so lovely, and the cottage so comfortable, that it felt almost like a holiday. It helped that the weather was beautiful and that it was the first time I’ve been able to travel for over a year! Alan (caretaker) was enormously helpful, sorting out our flat Land Rover tyre, and it was good to chat to Gareth & Mary as we both got on with our respective jobs. Hwyl Fawr a diolch!
Richard Rudd from Brighton: April 2021
This was our first time in Ty Mari after many visits to Penroc next door. We fell in love with this place too. The perfect place to relax and unwind. We now have the more difficult task of choosing between the two on our future visits! ♥

Family C from Swansea: April 2021
Stunning place, and Penroc has plenty of room for 4 adults (we had 2 teenagers). Very, very cosy, great balcony with stunning views. Shame it was cloudy otherwise star gazing is incredible, so I’ve read. Reminded us of the cottage in the film ‘The Holiday’ so we watched it on Netflix. It’s the same kitchen too haha. Great place, great host, great location.
LC from Radyr: March 2021
Penroc couldn’t be in a more delightful setting. The views are stunning and afford real peace and quiet. The early morning bleeding of the sheep and the river below the garden are bliss. The cottage is well appointed and has everything you need. Gareth offers quick and efficient communication and the stay is managed very professionally. The caretaker lives locally and is both friendly and a great source of local information. Whilst this was a work trip, I intend to return in the near future to explore the local area as a tourist – this part of Wales is a real hidden treasure.
SM from Cardiff March 2021

We had an amazing break. Great view, beautiful place and Penroc felt cosy. Nice nature around. We loved it.
James and Alkistis from London: July 2020
Can’t think of a more beautiful and peaceful place to be than Penroc while the world goes mad.
Emma and Gary from Bristol: March 2020
We came to relax and escape the world. Ty Mari allowed us to do just that. Gutted we didn’t have a clear enough night to see the stars. We will be back!
Ryan and Ashleigh from Chester: March 2020
Just wonderful in Ty Mari. You’ve thought of everything!
Johnny, Andy and Andy; March 2020
A relatively relaxed week – put some signs up, surveyed north of Dovey Estuary. Decent weather too.

Another good week in Ty Mari (our 42nd!). Good weather, good walks and, as always, good rest
Liz and Dave Durrant from Somerset: February 2020
We had the most wonderful week here at Penroc cottage and truly felt it was like a home from home. The views are incredible and walks and the mountain road just spectacular! Hafod and Elan Valley are ‘must visits’. Absolutely love it here in Cwmystwyth and will certainly return to Penroc. Thank you Gareth and Alan for looking after us so well. Our dog loves it here too!
Helle, Tony, Aila and our dog from West Sussex: February 2020
Our first visit to Penroc and loved every minute of our stay and wish we had booked the week. The cottage is really nice and very warm. The under-floor heating is nice on your feet. Loved our long walks round the Hafod Estate and got away with the really bad weather. Went to Aberystwyth one afternoon and there’s loads to do. Would definitely recommend it.
Simon and Sue and our dog from Meols, Merseyside: February 2020
Many thanks for another wonderful holiday! Ty Mari is perfect! Cosy, peaceful and views to die for! We’ve very much enjoyed walking and exploring the stunning countryside, despite the weather. Can’t wait to come back!

***** “Penroc is such a beautiful rural cottage. Clean cosy and comfortable. Has everything you need for the perfect holiday. The balcony is a wonderful bonus and perfect to star gaze at night! Highly recommended!”

We stayed at Ty Mari with family also hiring Penroc, this set up was just ideal as the cottages had an interconnecting door! The property was just as described but the views were even more spectacular. We took a lovely walk out of the cottage to the Hafod estate and found robbers cave, this is a must. We had teenagers with us (who can be are very slow) and we walked to the cave and back in approximately 2 hours. Simply turn right at the end of the lane and right again down a track, ideally I would recommend you download the OS maps on your phone before you leave, limited signal. We had everything we needed in the cottage and the fires were lovely at night, just to take that little chill out of the air. Highly recommend this place, thank you Gareth

“We had a lovely stay at Penroc. We visited Devils bridge and walked along the sea front. Penroc was lovely and clean and had all we could ask for with great communication from Gareth.”
GF from Swindon: August 2020
“Ty Mari is a really lovely cottage and we found it even more appealing than expected from the photos! There is everything that you need in the cottage and it feels really homely. There are houses nearby but it feels very rural and private on the whole, (especially if you hire Penroc as well I expect). There are nice walks nearby and if you are lucky you can see the amazing starry skies at night! Gareth responded to any queries really quickly and is an excellent host, along with the local caretaker.”
VS and family from Birmingham: August 2020
***** Stayed at Penroc for a few nights in August. We couldn’t have asked for anything better. Beautiful cottage with everything you need. We had lovely weather and the roof terrace was lovely to relax in the sun and take in the amazing views whilst listening to the waterfall. Very dog friendly with lots of lovely walks on your doorstep, would definitely recommend a visit to Hafod. Would definitely stay again and recommend it to friends and family. Beautiful place in a stunning location.

M & NL and family: August 2020

V & G and family from Cardiff: August 2020
We had an absolutely amazing time. We just loved Penroc and look forward to going back in a few years time. We will miss the balcony with the amazing view. No other holiday home has beaten that view along with all that Penroc offers. You really do have a special place in Wales and we miss it already!
C & OS from Evesham: Aug 2020
***** We had a brilliant stay with lots to explore; we really enjoyed the Hafod Forest treks, which are close enough to get to on foot. It was amazing to be able to listen to the river waterfalls from your bed in the morning. Equally beautiful views in sunny or rainy weather. The place is cosy in feel and warmth with heated floor. Everything was clean, TV, books, games; everything to entertain in the evenings provided.

***** Penroc is a study in hosting excellence. Thoughtfulness, attention to detail and quality are lavished on this cosy mountain sanctuary. We booked in haste and were delighted at our leisure. A rare treat.

Booked for a 4 day lads walking and cycling break before the Corona lock down. It was just perfect. Cottage was stocked with everything we needed to feel right at home. It was warm, beds were comfortable (One of my mates is the size of a giraffe and even fit in the bed), clean and the out side area had great views. Internet speed was terrific and TV full of entertainment. The area is amazing with breathtaking views and wonderful wildlife. I will be returning with the family ASAP so they can enjoy this amazing area.

Our stay in Penroc couldn’t have been more perfect! The location and the views are out of this world – and the cottage has all you need for a stay that’s like a home away from home. The view from the living room and the balcony was spectacular and this coupled with being so close to the stunning mountain road, Hafod Estate and the Elan Valley (all of which are a must visit) made our stay one of the best we have had in Mid Wales. Our dogs loved the stay too and especially the trip to Ynyslas beach, which is definitely worth a visit. Alan, the caretaker, and Gareth the manager, were both incredibly helpful and responsive – perfect hosts. Thank you and we’ll be back for sure!!
HA from West Sussex: February 2020
We stayed in Penroc for three nights with our two daughters and little dog and had a really lovely time. The cottage is so welcoming and has everything we needed to make our stay a home from home. We loved sitting and watching the birds and the beautiful landscape.
CH from Stafford: February 2020
First visit here and loved every minute of our stay in Penroc. Wished we had booked a full week. The cottage is really nice and very warm. The underfloor heating is nice on your feet. Loved our long walks round the Hafod estate and got away with really bad weather. Went to Aberystwyth one afternoon and there’s loads to do. Would definitely recommend it. See you very soon!

Ty Mari is a wonderful cottage. We had the best Christmas EVER!
Family F from Leicester: January 2020
What a fabulous holiday! Maybe a little rain but the cottages are set in the centre of the wonderful Welsh countryside. The cottages are traditional and very well serviced for comfort and home entertainment although we spent most of our time on outside walks, of which there are so many to choose from. Such a great place for adults and children (and dogs!) with seaside towns just a short drive away. A great way to refresh and reinvigorate in an atmosphere of peace and quiet.
R & PM from Kent: November 2019
The secret is 10 days in Penroc! The only problem is that we would need 2 weeks Emoji. Would love to say something bad about our stay so the rest of you would stay away but that’s not fair and we can’t afford to stay forever! We will be back again. We LOVE Penroc and would change nothing. EmojiEmojiEmoji EmojiEmoji. Alan, the caretaker, is very helpful and friendly.
J & C M from Exeter: October 2019
This is our second stay at Penroc and it was as lovely as the first time. We would love to stay for longer but sadly it is hard to get time off work. We are both police officers. We really needed a break from the stress of work and we leave feeling a lot more relaxed and able to face going back to ‘real life’. We are also leaving, planning our future together after getting engaged on this trip! A proposal in the pouring rain…perfect! We will be back soon, hopefully for longer.
G & TR from Olney: October 2019
Penroc is a beautiful cottage, well equipped, in a great location. We would love to come again.

C & A M from Stevenage: October 2019
“I cannot recommend Ty Mari enough. We booked to bring an Australian relative and she was blown away. Not only is it amazingly well equipped with absolutely everything you need, it has extras like shelves of DVDs, books, CDs, games and puzzles. There is gorgeous local art work around and the welcoming book is so helpful. It was really cosy and warm, the sofa was so comfy as were the beds. It was the perfect base to explore the mountains, Elan Valley, Aberystwyth etc. We walked down to the river and it was just magical. We cooked each night we were there and it was like a home from home. We’ll definitely be back (with the kids!!)”.
