Enjoy the beautiful and charming area of Mid Wales

The green heart of Wales, Mid Wales is a truly magical location. You can expect dramatic hill walks, bustling market towns, hidden covers of the Ceredigion coastline, bright harbours, and clear seas. It truly is a one-of-a-kind location, with plenty of charming self catering holiday cottages that provide you with the perfect place to rest your head during your trip.

Experience a truly remote location in the Cambrian Mountains

One of the highlights of Mid Wales is the Cambrian Mountains. This is one of the few remote areas remaining in Southern Britain that offers picturesque routes and wild open moorlands. The sparkling nestled lakes and vast rolling ridges have made this spot incredibly popular with those seeking peace and tranquillity, as well as explorers searching for somewhere new and natural to uncover.

Perfect for those seeking a dog-friendly holiday

There are lots of dog-friendly self-catering holiday cottages in Mid Wales. So, if you are looking to take your dog on your next trip, this could be the perfect location for you. You will find that there are a lot of walks that are dog-friendly as well, so you can explore the natural beauty of Wales away from sheep! Beautiful places to explore with your dog include the vast parklands, glorious gardens, incredible coastlines like Ynyslas estuary, Hafod Forest, and the rugged mountains in the area. Your canine friend will enjoy the holiday just as much as you will!

Take a trip to the Vale of Rheidol railway

There are a lot of great attractions in Mid Wales, and one that we recommend highly is the Vale of Rheidol railway. The Vale of Rheidol railway gives you the ability to make a more leisurely trip through the countryside. Between the middle of-April and late October, you can expect early 20th-century steam locomotives to run from Aberystwyth to the village of Devil’s Bridge, which is nearby. The 12-mile trip takes around an hour. The journey is a truly majestic one, as you will get to enjoy the fun, history, and charm of a steam train while also looking out to see the most fantastic views of the valley. This is the sort of activity that the entire family can enjoy, so you won’t want to miss out.

Where else can you visit during your self catering holiday in Mid Wales?

Aside from all of the amazing attractions, trails, and scenery that we have mentioned above, there are plenty of other places to visit and things to enjoy while in Mid Wales. This includes The Silver Mountain Experience, The Magic of Life Butterfly House, Rheidol Riding Centre, and Fantasy Farm Park. Other activities and places of note include Gilfach Nature Discovery Centre, Girgin Farm, Lion Royal Hotel Trekking, Aberystwyth Mystery Treasure Trail, Dolaucothi Gold Mines, Llanerchaeron, Borth Wild Animal Kingdom, Borth Beach, Blue Island Ceramics, National Cycle Museum, Glyndwers Way National Trail, Bro Ddyfi Leisure Centre, and much more! What a breath taking hidden part... of Wales. Stunning cottages with stunning views at every turn. We were a family of 9 so stayed in both the cottages. They were a real home from home. Lovingly equipped with everything you could ever need. From leaflets for things to do, kitchen equipment, board games, puzzles and not forgetting the peaceful setting and its beautiful local walks with stunning surroundings. It mostly rained for our week away but that didn't effect our holiday at all. I would highly recommend 🙂read more

My partner and I had a truly... wonderful time in Ty Mari and Penroc. We decided to book both (it's perfectly setup for larger family groups as there is an ajoining door between both). Both are very homely and you can easily relax once you get there. The Elan Valley is absolutely spectacular and the drive to the cottages takes you on a thrilling drive through the valley with lots of places to stop and wonder at including Devils Bridge and the Caban Coch Dam to name only 2. The cottages are easy to keep warm with the added benefit of underfloor heating so we were always cosy. It also gets really dark at night (something us townies aren't used to) and you can see more of the nights sky than I think I ever have! What I also am particularly impressed with is the communication from the owners before & after you arrive. They give great recommendations and ensure that your stay is really easy! We would highly recommend Welsh Hideaways. It's a real retreat and we returned home feeling refreshed and with a renewed appreciation of Wales.read more
