Many famous river fisheries find their sources in the craggy uplands of the Cambrian mountains. Rhayader lies on the banks of the river Wye and is close to the spectacular Elan Valley lakes.  These lakes are a series of deep, steep-banked reservoirs built to provide water for the Midlands, but they also provide good fishing in stunning surroundings.  Llyn Clywedog is well known for the quality and number of its trout.  It’s also heavily stocked with good sized rainbow trout.  The area claims to provide some of the best and most affordable fly-fishing waters in the country. The Aberystwyth Angling Association issues day permits for visitors fishing in local rivers and lakes.  They have some superb fishing on many small llyns in the hills behind Aberystwyth and fantastic sewin and salmon fishing on the River Rheidol as it wends its way from the mountains to Cardigan Bay, passing close to Welsh Hideaways.  It has been said that there’s a lifetime’s amount of fantastic and often secluded and solitary fishing for the adventurous angler in the Cambrian Mountains.  In Summer, remember insect repellent!  A rod licence is required and can be obtained from a Post Office or online.  A permit to fish is also needed.
